Food Functionality Test Using Various Candidate Materials

A screening test was perfomed to find out material that inhibits the secretion of lipoprotein in the supernatant of HepG2 cells co-cultured with various test samples.
Water shield (Brasenia Schreberi), Akita Prefecture’s local product, was selected as a final candidate for development.

When C57BL/6 mice were fed with a high-fat diet and Water Shield extract for 2 weeks, improvement of triglyceride level and inhibiting the increase of visceral fat were observed.
An imporatant prospect this test indicates is that utilizing LipoSEARCH in cell test might be an alternative to animal testing especially in the field of functional food development.
